Events
Throughout the year Cumbria enjoys some great events. Here are just a few highlights.
Holker Garden Festival
Lord and Lady Cavendish open the grounds of Holker Hall for the North's premier garden event. Exciting arena events, wonderful local produce, plus a special guest appearance – all set in a beautiful landscape.
The Festival has attractions for all the family, from gardening inspiration, bouncy castles and over 200 exhibitors. The terrier racing is my highlight - it's a full day out.
Windermere Air Festival
There's no better place to stay during the Windermere Air Festival than Windermere Marina Village. With the population explosion the traffic can get heavy. All the action on the Glebe at Bowness Bay is only a 15 – 20 minute walk away but if you think that sounds like too much sit back on your balcony and watch the overhead display from the comfort of your own self catering cottage or apartment.
Westmorland County Show
Want to see what Cumbria is all about in one day then you have to head to the Westmorland County Show.
One of Britain's oldest and Cumbria's biggest livestock shows. A particular highlight is the Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling…if you've not seen it before you must make sure you check it out. There are also over 350 trade stands to browse and the country's largest local produce food hall with celebrity chef demonstrations. Held in early September there are free buses from Kendal to get you there.
Mintfest
In early September Kendal comes alive when over 150 street performers descend onto the cobbled streets. Around every corner you will find a mix of dance, comedy, music, drama and magic.
Ulverston Dickensian Christmas Festival
The small Cumbrian market town transports itself to 1850 at the start of the Christmas season. Wander around the Christmas market with mulled wine in hand and soak up the atmosphere. There's always some street entertainment and a great Christmas market to find some unusual gifts and festive foods.
