Mooring FAQ's

Do you have car parking?

There is a large car park available at the Marina but parking is strictly limited to one car per berth during peak times. Access is controlled by a barrier. Additional parking is available in the public car park on the Ferry Road, less than two minutes by foot from the pedestrian access to the rear of the Marina.

Can you use the boat and facilities all year?

Windermere Marina Village is open 365 days a year and Mooring Holders are entitled to use their boat at any time they wish, as often as they wish. However, it is not permitted to use the Marina as a permanent address.

Can you stay on the boat for holidays?

Windermere Marina Village is open 365 days a year, allowing Mooring Holders access to their boats at all times. During school holidays the Marina is busy and there is a close and fun loving community to be found there.

Are there other places to moor up on the Lake?

There are a number of public jetties on the Lake that can be used to moor your boat for short periods of time, these include FELL FOOT, BOWNESS BAY and WATERHEAD. There is also landing permitted at Rawlinson Nab on the Western Shore of the Lake. There are many other quiet anchorages to be found in bays all around the Lake, however it is wise to use your discretion and avoid mooring in the path of the Lake Steamers or their jetties. It is not permitted to moor on a swinging mooring unless you own the right to do so.

IT IS NOT RECOMMENDED TO STAY AT ANCHOR OVERNIGHT AS THE BED OF THE LAKE IS VERY SILTY AND NOT SUITABLE TO HOLD AN UNSUPERVISED ANCHOR.

Do you need a license to go boating on Windermere?

There is no license required to use a boat on Lake Windermere. However it is recommended that first time boat owners take a few lessons in boat handling before taking the boat out on the Lake.

Although no license is required, all boats need to be registered with the Lake Wardens at the Public Slipway on the Ferry Road. This fee is paid annually from Jan 1st and charged by length of boat.

What security do you have?

The Marina and Jetties are patrolled several times a day by the marina staff. At night the Marina is patrolled by a security guard who can be reached by telephone in an emergency [07403 547803]. To provide additional security to your property there is also a barrier in operation at the entrance to the Marina to which only members and guests of Windermere Marina have access.

Do you have a slipway?

Yes, we have our own slipway which is available for use by our clients during office hours. One slip in and one slip out are included with a mooring. A minimal charge is made for further uses.

Do you have crane and workshop facilities?

A crane and bay, and a workshop are all located on-site at Windermere Marina Village. These facilities are in operation from Monday to Friday, throughout the year and are operated by Shepherds Marine Ltd.

Are fuel, water and pump-out available close by?

Fuel is available in Bowness Bay and at Low Wood, Near Ambleside. Re-fuelling craft within the Marina is strictly prohibited.

Windermere Marina Village has a mobile pump-out unit; for a small fee we can pump-out your boat onsite ready for your arrival, saving you time and hassle. Please contact reception to book 015394 46551. Other Pumping Stations for foul waste are located at the public slipway in Bowness Bay, at Tower Wood and at Low Wood (fees may apply)

Can sea toilets be used on the Lake?

Boats on Windermere are NOT permitted to discharge waste into the Lake. Lake Windermere is a reservoir. Sea toilets CANNOT be operated under any circumstances whilst on the Lake and they must remain sealed at all times. It is an offence to use a sea toilet or break the seal that is placed onboard by the ENVIRONMENT AGENCY. Holding tanks fitted to your vessel offer the facility of waste storage and these can be pumped out at various locations around the Lake.

Are powered craft still allowed on Windermere?

Powered craft are still permitted to use Lake Windermere, however the craft must not exceed 10mph in speed at any time

Are there restrictions on when you can enter and leave the Marina by boat?

Because Lake Windermere is a Lake and is not affected by tidal changes in water depth, there are no restrictions as to when you can enter and leave the Marina.

It is however advisable to you use your discretion during inclement weather. While the sheltered lagoon of the Marina may seem calm during high winds, the open water of the Lake can be rough and difficult to navigate. Similarly when there is ice on the surface of the Lake, manoeuvring your boat can be difficult and dangerous.

Do you have an Elsan disposal point?

The Elsan Disposal point is in the building adjacent to the back gate.

Can boats stay in the water all year round?

Because Lake Windermere is fresh water it is possible for boats to remain in the water all year round. However, in the Winter, precautions MUST be taken to protect your boat from frost.

How affected are you by bad weather?

Due to the Marina's sheltered location in a lagoon off the main Lake, Windermere Marina Village has the benefit of being protected from most occurrences of high winds and other spells of inclement weather.
